In short: 2 Mai = quiet and authentic, Vama Veche = lively and eclectic. Below the table, everything is nuance.

Authentic quiet

2 Mai beach

Authentic quiet

"What the coast was like 20 years ago" — that's how long-time visitors describe it.

The atmosphere

2 Mai has kept a character that's rare on the Romanian coast. Families on the beach in the morning, fishermen any time, a few locals who've held on to their holiday homes here. The shops and terraces are small, authentic. No big hotels, no beach clubs. It's the destination if you want to read a book on the beach without hearing reggaeton at full volume.

The beach

About 2-3 km of fine golden sand, partly wild towards the south (heading to Vama Veche). Clean water, gentle entry to the sea — good for kids. A few kiosks for water, snacks, ice cream. Equipment rental (umbrellas, loungers) is limited — best to bring your own.

Food

The beach restaurants are institutions — the fish is caught in the morning and lands on the grill by lunch. Relaxed atmosphere, reasonable prices (~50-90 RON for a main fish course, in 2026). Several guesthouses also serve good food, especially breakfast.

Best for

Families with small kids, couples on their second or third holiday together, people who remember the quieter days of the coast and want that atmosphere back, fishermen, those who want to be by the sea without the noise.

Bohemian energy

Vama Veche

Bohemian energy

The unofficial capital of the young Romanian coast — festivals, barefoot on the sand, spontaneous concerts since the '70s.

The atmosphere

Energetic, alternative, no strict rules. In summer, young people dominate — students, artists, free-spirited folks. The place has a "hippie reserve" tradition from the '70s when it was a refuge for Romanian artists. Today the atmosphere is more commercial but keeps its essence: music, sunset on the sand, bars open until morning, improvised concerts.

The beach

4.3 km of golden sand, more populated and more maintained than 2 Mai. Beach bars, music from noon until 3 a.m., loungers and umbrellas to rent everywhere. At the southern end — the Bulgarian border (1 km), where you can do a short cross-border trip.

Food & nightlife

Dozens of restaurants, terraces and bars. Pizza at 3 a.m., grilled mici on the beach, everywhere, spontaneous concerts. In summer, on the main street there's no quiet moment between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. Prices slightly higher than 2 Mai, but the variety is enormous (from fast-food to upscale).

Best for

Young people, groups of friends, those looking for festivals and nightlife, visitors with an alternative spirit. Less suited for families with small kids (loud at night) or for those seeking intimacy.

How to choose based on what you want

A few common scenarios and what we'd recommend for each:

  • Family with small kids

    2 Mai

Quiet beach, gentle sea entry, no loud music at night.

  • Holiday with friends / festival

    Vama Veche

    Festivals, nightlife, group atmosphere.

  • Couple's first holiday together

Vama Veche for buzz, 2 Mai for intimacy

Depends on what you're after — talk it through first.

  • Relaxed holiday with evenings out

Limanu (the Vis de Primăvară villa)

Days at 2 Mai for quiet beach, a short 15-min trip to Vama Veche in the evening.

  • Off-season holiday (June / September)

    Both work

Crowds drop dramatically. 2 Mai becomes "like 20 years ago"; Vama Veche is pleasant even for families.

  • You also want nature (cave, forest, lake)

    The Vis de Primăvară villa

The only stay with a cave at 900 m and a lake at the window. The beaches are 10-13 min away.

Why choose when you can have both?

Or...

Why choose when you can have both?

The smartest choice is often not to choose. The Vis de Primăvară villa is in Limanu, right between 2 Mai (~10 min) and Vama Veche (~13 min). You can spend the day at the quiet beach, come back for a grill dinner in the private yard, then drive 15 minutes for a Vama Veche evening. All in a day.

  • 2 Mai beach at ~10 min — for family-friendly days
  • Vama Veche at ~13 min — for evenings out
  • Lake Limanu view from the terrace
  • Limanu Cave at 900 m — the only stay with a cave on foot
  • Private yard, BBQ, 4 bedrooms — the rest of the time, at home
